Kelledy Jones Lawyers and RMIA and Thought Leadership Forum

LG Leader March 2018

On Friday 16 February 2018, Kelledy Jones Lawyers was partnered with the Risk Management Institute of Australasia (RMIA) to present a Thought Leadership Forum to an audience of 55 attendees. This included senior council staff, Elected Members and risk procurement experts, to explore and discuss local government procurement of risk and insurance, and to examine current, and alternative, structures for South Australian councils.

Guest speakers included Scott Ryrie, CEO of the RMIA, and Brenton Scroop, managing Director of Ashton Advisory and RMIA SA and NT Chapter President, who discussed risk management as it pertained to council exposure, and the increased complexity in this field for councils.

Josef Radinja, Industry Leader Government and Education with Willis Towers Watson, spoke of the changing nature of the insurance landscape for local government over recent years, and the work Willis Towers Watson has done with councils to align risk management approaches with insurance programs.

Andrew Armistead, Executive Officer with Civic Risk Mutual, spoke to the joint venture managed and run by Civic Risk Mutual, which provides insurance and risk services for 16 councils in the Sydney metro and Illawarra region, and Robyn Daly, Scheme Manager of the MLS, together with Tony Gray, General Manager Local Government Risk Services with JLT, spoke about the origins of the mutual liability scheme, and the benefits of the scheme for South Australian councils.

The forum was an opportunity for councils to test and challenge previously held thoughts and assumptions, and to ask the panel of experts questions in relation to these issues.
