Local Government - there’s no place like home

LG Leader March 2018

It’s good to be back. I didn’t really go anywhere, but I did have a bit of a different focus for the last few years. Having been working in some different industries I come back to local government with the same passion that I had when I left. Some things have changed, but many things haven’t.

Councils are constantly asked to do more with less – either because other levels of government impose more obligations on them or the community expects more of them, in an environment where there is scrutiny of any rate increase. As a result, councils need to find innovative ways to deliver services and infrastructure, otherwise they will not be able to meet the expectations of the community or meet their obligations.

Over the years I have helped councils to improve their asset management processes, develop, fund and build infrastructure to improve the services which they provide and worked with them to understand their property portfolios and identify opportunities for them to improve the use of that portfolio.

While there are many challenges facing councils, I believe that these challenges should be seen as opportunities, or catalysts for improvement for councils. Of course, there are rules and regulations which councils need to follow, but I view my role as an advisor to councils to help them navigate their way through those rules and regulations to achieve the outcome that they want to achieve for their community, rather than telling them what they can’t do.

I look forward to working with councils to navigate their way through these challenges. If you have a challenge, and you’re looking to achieve an outcome, please give me a call on 08 8113 7107.  Look forward to hearing from you.
